One of the most common points of confusion with jewelry is the difference between an appraisal value and what a piece might actually sell for.
An appraisal is typically prepared for a specific purpose, such as insurance coverage, and the value shown may reflect what it could cost to replace the piece—not what someone would pay to purchase it from you today.
If you’re considering selling, the value is determined differently. Factors such as the current market, precious metal value, diamonds and gemstones, designer or maker, condition, rarity and resale demand can all affect what a buyer is willing to pay.
That means a piece with a $10,000 insurance appraisal does not necessarily have a $10,000 resale value—and that doesn’t mean the appraisal was wrong. The two numbers simply serve different purposes.
